The science of ethics addresses issues having both moral and practical significance. Decisions are not simply reactive, such as choosing which bus to catch, but involve concepts of study and responsibility, and of conflicts between rival goods or ills. Reflections upon the ethical significance and correctness of any situation require the use of judgmental reason which is not always familiar to engineers, fine-tuned as they are to use of deductive logic and the pursuit of the “correct” answer to any technical problem.
